Walking Meditation (Chankramana)

Meditation in motion: slow, mindful steps with the breath - perfect if sitting still is hard.

  • Calms the mind while the body moves
  • Easier than sitting meditation for restless minds
  • Brings attention back to the present

How to do it

  1. Find a quiet path of 10-20 steps, indoors or outside.
  2. Stand still for a moment. Feel your feet on the ground and take three slow breaths.
  3. Walk slowly. Notice each part of the step - lifting, moving, placing the foot.
  4. Match the breath with the steps if it feels natural, for example two steps in, two steps out.
  5. At the end of the path, pause, turn slowly and walk back.
  6. When the mind wanders, gently return to the feeling of the feet. Continue for 5-10 minutes.
Go gently: Walk on a safe, even surface and keep your eyes open, softly looking ahead.
From the Vedic texts · Bhagavad Gita 6.17

The Gita says yoga removes sorrow for one who is balanced in eating, rest and movement. Walking meditation is movement done in exactly that calm, balanced way.

Try next

This is general wellness information, not medical advice. Move slowly, never force a pose or a breath, and stop if you feel pain, dizziness or breathlessness. If you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, heart, lung or eye conditions, or recent surgery, ask your doctor before starting.
